Taking Control of Stress
At one time or another, you've probably felt stress when it comes to school. Maybe you had to stay up late and cram last minute for an exam, juggle many different assignments or write a paper when you were suffering from writer's block. It is very easy to get overwhelmed. You can learn to manage your stress with your online high school studies. Use these tips to make learning easier and keep your peace of mind:
Get Organized: Is your desk full of loose papers? Are your assignments all mixed together? Do you forget when your next test is? You need to get organized! Use a binder with dividers to organize your papers. Even though you aren't traveling to class, this can help you sort your paperwork for online high school. Create a place for notes, assignments and tests. Also keep a calendar and schedule important deadlines and due dates. Use a file system for other important papers. No matter what system you use, you will feel much better knowing that you are properly organized.
Create a Good Study Environment: You should study in an environment that is conducive to learning. Turn down the TV, unplug the phone and choose a place that enables you to concentrate solely on your studies. Choose an area with a desk or table and comfortable. Make sure there is ample lighting and all or your supplies are within reach. Soft music or the whir of a fan might help create a comfortable environment; although you don't want it to be so comfortable that you fall asleep. A good study space can be the key to getting the job done!
Practice Time Management: Always give yourself enough time to complete your online high school assignments. It is important to plan ahead and schedule the proper amount of time to get your work done. This way if you encounter any obstacles, you have ample time to get help or work your way through the problem. Plan on what subject you will work on when and stick to your schedule. Don't allow yourself to be swayed by outside distractions!
Be Optimistic: Don't assume that you're going to fail or that you won't finish an assignment. Keep a positive state of mind and be confident that you can tackle any goal or obstacle. If you don't allow yourself to get bogged down or overcome with stress, you will be more likely to focus and succeed with your online high school class.
Use Visualizations: This is a proven technique! Imagine yourself getting your work done and achieving your academic goals. Take a deep breath, relax and use visualizations to help you succeed. Take a few minutes to picture what you'd like to have happen, such as finishing an exam in the allotted time or giving a speech in a confident manner.
Sleep, sleep, sleep: You can't reach your goals when you're sleep deprived. If you want to perform at an optimum level, you need to get enough sleep. When your mind and body are well rested, you will be more likely to succeed. It's very difficult to retain material and complete a paper if you're overtired. Go to sleep at a reasonable hour and take a nap if you need extra energy.
Don't allow stress to interfere with your online high school education. It is easy to have a positive, stress-free academic experience by planning ahead and being prepared. Make sure that you follow the aforementioned tips to tackle stress and succeed with your studies. You are in control of your education.

The ABCs of Accreditation
Accreditation is the single most important factor when considering an online high school education. If you are looking to enroll, you need to make sure that the school is accredited. Don't let your efforts be wasted. A school that is not accredited can lead to a dead-end when it comes to going to college or applying for a job. You want to make sure that you receive a quality online high school education that will open the door to possibilities.
What is accreditation? Accreditation is the process of evaluating a school or educational program to determine whether it meets the standards set up by an accrediting organization.
Why is it important? Accreditation is important because it assures current and prospective students that the academic programs as well as staff, support and related resources have been reviewed and critiqued to guarantee their highest quality.
When you apply to college or go on a job interview, the school or employer will be assured that you have the necessary academic background. You can be confident that your credentials will be accepted at colleges and employers nationwide.
How does a school get accredited? When a school is accredited, it undergoes a thorough review conducted by an accrediting agency. The review typically happens every few years and involves an in-depth examination of the school. The outside agency looks closely at the course materials, educational support services, staff, resources, and more to determine if they all meet specific criteria.
What happens if I choose a school that is not accredited? If you choose a school that is not accredited, you may find that your diploma won't be accepted by a college or employer. Your education may not be recognized as quality and relevant in the workplace or classroom.
What can I do to determine if a school is accredited? Find out the accrediting organization directly from the school. You can verify the accreditation by contacting the organization and/or doing research online. This information is readily available on the Internet. You can determine if the school was approved for accreditation. If it was turned down, you can find out why. See what other schools are accredited by that organization and how long they have been in business.
Think of it as a stamp of approval. Accreditation from the right agency means that you will receive a quality education that has been critiqued and reviewed to meet specific standards. You have to be especially careful when you enroll in an online high school course. Sometimes what you think you're getting is not the case at all. Do you homework and make sure you choose an accredited education.

Achieve Your College Goals
As you go through online high school, it is important to keep your college goals in mind. From the onset of high school, colleges will be interested in what classes you take and how you are faring in school. Make sure you stay on the college path. Enroll in online high school classes that are consistent with college requirements.
- Start early - Although you don't need to know exactly what college you are going to attend your freshman year, you should know the basic requirements of a state college or university.
- Map out your online high school career - This can help you create a game plan for high school. You will know exactly what online high school classes to take each year so that you will be ready when it is time to apply to college.
- Enroll in college-prep classes - Most schools offer classes that meet college requirements. Make sure your credits will be accepted as prerequisites to the college of your choice.
- Stay on track - Once you set a plan, don't deviate from it. Make sure you stick to your plan and meet your online high school requirements each year. Before you know it, you will be ready for college.
Requirements
A sample curriculum for a college-bound high school student might include: four years of English, three years of math, three years of science, two years of a foreign language, four years of social studies, at least one year of art and/or music. Four years of physical education is a typical requirement, as well as a health/life skills class and electives (such as a computer or psychology class). Check with your college to see the exact requirements!
Tips:
- Use an academic advisor to assist you with your goals. These individuals can help you enroll in the right online high school classes.
- Opt to enroll in a more difficult class than an easier one. A good grade in a harder class is viewed as better than a great grade in an easier class by most colleges.
- Balance your online high school career with extra-curricular activities. Choose to pursue your favorite sport or drama class to round out your high school education.
The key to success is balance. Your hardwork and dedication will pay off if you stay focused and keep your goals in mind.

Time Management: The Key to Success
Time management is an essential factor for success in online high school. If you get yourself organized and stay on top of assignments and deadlines, you will be more likely to succeed in an online high school class. Make a list of things to do, map out the semester, or get a calendar. This will give you the advantage you need to complete your online high school education in a timely and successful manner. Tips to Get Organized

Prioritize your list. Decide what's most important, or what needs to get done first. You can arrange your list in order of when each assignment is due. Don’t forget to add in time to study for the quizzes and chapter tests. The final result should include a comprehensive list of tasks that need to be completed at specific times.

Make a schedule. This is the important part. Take your prioritized list and determine how long it will take to accomplish each task. For example, if you have a test on Friday, you might want to start to study on Monday. If you can complete an assignment in one night, make a note of it. Do this for all of the assignments, quizzes and tests.
Fill your calendar. Now it's time to use that calendar you bought. You can take the schedule you created and simply write it onto your calendar. Include the necessary deadlines, due dates and schedule of daily work. Be careful not to overbook yourself and give yourself ample time to get things done. You are in charge of your schedule.
Taking high school classes online is very similar to being in a traditional classroom. You need to be organized and use time management to effectively get your work done. Deadlines and assignments can sneak up on you if you are not properly prepared. Take control of your online high school education. Create a schedule that will help you succeed. Whether you enroll in an online summer school class or participate in the full curriculum, you can benefit from these time management techniques.

College-Bound Homeschoolers
In recent years,
homeschooling has become a prevalent means of learning for students in the United States. It is commonplace to find homeschool students at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. Most estimates confirm that the number of these students continues to increase each year.
As they progress from one grade to the next, the question of college eventually comes into the picture. Colleges and universities are receiving a growing number of applications from homeschool students. Are they ready for college? Should these students be assessed in the same manner as traditional classroom children? Will they be successful?
Does homeschooling prepare students for college?
Yes! It has been determined that homeschooled students and traditional classroom students exhibit similar academic readiness for college. The test scores of homeschool students are high (Rudner, 1999).They tend to score above the national average on both the SAT and ACT, the primary tests used by colleges in evaluating college applicants. When homeschool students enroll in private or public schools, they tend to start at one or more grades above their actual age level.
Do colleges recognize homeschoolers?
About one-third of colleges and universities have adopted measures to fairly review the credentials of homeschool students (Cohen, 2000). A majority of admissions departments at these schools already have specific standards in place. There is common advice for homeschool students that plan to attend college:
1. Seek early counsel (prior to the start of 9th grade) from colleges they want to attend.
2. Prepare a student portfolio that includes the coursework (transcript prepared by parent or other homeschool teacher), academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and SAT or ACT test scores (Patrick Henry College, 2000).
How do homeschoolers do in college?
It has been determined that homeschoolers do just as well in college as their traditional classroom counterparts. In a study conducted by Sutton and Galloway (2000), it was concluded that home school, private school and public school students were equally successful in the areas of achievement, leadership, professional aptitude, physical activity, and social behavior. In short, homeschoolers were just as likely to succeed in college as other types of students.

Filling the Gap: Summer School
ANHS October, 2005 - By, C. Lawrence
Getting through your high school years is hard enough; worrying about summer school is the last thing a student wants to do as he or she finally leaves their classroom on a hot day in June. Unfortunately many students do not have a choice. In order to graduate on time, they must complete classes outside of the normal school term.
Students who have failed a course, want to take extra electives, or wish to speed up their high school career by taking advanced classes, can turn to
online high school! What better way to complete a summer school class than in the comfort of your own home. If you ask the average student what they prefer, a hot classroom in the middle of July or the comfort of their own home, I think the answer will be obvious.
Parents are given the
greatest flexibility with online high school. Instead of having to drive their child to and from summer school at odd hours, they can rest assured that their child is working at home or in a supervised office setting. Students are monitored closely by an
online high school teacher, and the parents are given constant access to student reports. There are no distractions and no fears. Students have the ability to take courses at their own pace in a setting of their choice. Due to the
flexible enrollment options that online high school provides, students can enroll in a class at any time. If you attend private or public school, online high school will have a course starting at a time you need.
When attending
online high school, be sure to attend a school with full accreditation. If the school does not have an official accreditation and is not approved by a legitimate and Dept. of Education approved accrediting body, you may be attending an online diploma mill. Be very cautious of any organization promising a high school diploma or course certification through the mail in 48 hours. This is not a valid high school option. Local private and public schools will not accept these credits as valid courses. Only fully-accredited online high school classes will transfer.
Fill in those hot summer months with a breath of fresh air - online education.
Enroll in online high school today to keep your student on track and in line for a successful high school graduation.

The Distance Education Story
ANHS November, 2005 - By, H. Brunson
You have decided that you want a change. Maybe you want to return to school full time or take one class to get ahead. However, you might have special learning needs, have a busy schedule, or live far away from a school. What do you do? Distance education enables you to complete your coursework away from an actual school campus. Think of it as a virtual classroom. You independently get your high school education through online classes. This enables you to be in charge of your future, with the ability to make your own decisions regarding every aspect of your education. In todays society, distance education is becoming a necessary alternative to traditional face-to-face instruction. There is a greater percentage of students facing extenuating circumstances. Also, many individuals are unable or unwilling to attend an onsite school. As a result, there is a growing need for different educational methods.
Benefits of Distance Education
Distance education is on the rise. With availability, enrollment and course offerings dramatically increasing in the last decade, there is a greater need for quality home-study programs. More individuals are taking advantage of the distance learning option. It provides you with the following benefits:
Flexible schedule: You can learn on your own time and at your own pace.
Convenient setting: You can attend class from almost any location.
Accessible materials: You can retrieve class materials at any time.
Relevant content: You can gain real-world experience.
Ease of use: You can easily access class materials.
Work/family balance: You can maintain the responsibilities in your life while you attend high school.
