It's that time of year again -- students are returning to school. Just as students in traditional high school prepare for the new school year, so should online high school students. There are things that they can do to get ready for their online high school education. This might not include buying new clothes or filling out paperwork, but there are steps they can perform to make sure they are ready for the new school year.

Tips to prepare for online high school classes

Buy supplies -- To succeed with their online high school classes, they will need school supplies. Although they might not need traditional supplies such as pencils, scissors and markers, they can benefit from a new binder, dividers, paper, CD-ROMs, printer ink cartridges, and more. They should make sure they have everything they need to effectively tackle their studies and participate in an online high school course.

Organize work area -- Online high school students do not sit in a traditional classroom setting, but it is important that they have a designated work space 100% devoted to their online studies. They should clear off their desks, create an effective filing system, and put a new light bulb in their desk lamp -- they should create a work area that is effective and accessible.

Determine a schedule -- It is important to plan ahead and determine when they are going to participate in their online high school class. By setting a specific time each day, they will create a routine and stay on top of their studies. The benefit of an online high school education is that they can learn day or night. It is just essential to be consistent.

Read, read, read -- One thing that is very important for all high school students is to read books for enjoyment or outside of the school curriculum. Reading on a consistent basis can increase their ability to comprehend what they read; give them greater familiarity with correct grammar, punctuation and spelling; and make them more open to new thoughts and ideas.

Preparing for online high school is similar to preparing for traditional high school. Students need to be proactive and make sure they have everything they need to succeed with their studies. They should be ready to go on the first day and not scrambling after the fact. By thinking ahead, they will give themselves an advantage when they start their online high school program and tackle their first assignment.

In many ways, homeschooling is much like a worker telecommuting from his job. Students taking online high school courses can customize their education to fit the needs of their home life, just as employees working from home have more flexibility in their work schedule.

A few tips from the world of telecommuting will help online high school students get the most out of their online high school education. The most important tip for homeschoolers is to have a workspace: a desk, a table, even a bench out on the porch where they always do their work. The idea is that when you plop your laptop down at this work station, you're ready for school business.

Another good rule of thumb is to shut off your cell phone. In most classrooms, teachers expect students to turn their gadgets off; this is also a good policy for your virtual high school experience. Another way to minimize distractions is to check your e-mail before you log on, and then keep away until your study period is over. And as far as that temptation to surf the 'net goes, consider yourself off-line until you're done (of course some lessons may require online research, which is quite different from surfing).

Television, radios and iPods may not be the best companions when studying. Some people can study just fine with Mozart in the background, but Britney Spears may be another story. The key is to know yourself: if you're someone who is easily distracted, then turn off the high-tech gear and let yourself focus on the course. Your online high school program requires the same level of concentration as a traditional classroom.

Finally, let your friends and family know what your general study hours are. Nobody would dare walk in on Mr. Jones' Biology class at Lincoln High School, so make sure they understand that an online high school education is no different.
